Facebook not just for the young

Facebook isn't just for social media junkies, procrastinators, or those friending old friends, flames or acquaintances—it’s for the grandmas and grandpas and bubbies and zaidies alike. It is a way for older adults, specifically grandparents too login and keep track of their grandchildren. In this particular circumstance, I'm referring to Joe Greenfield--my cousin Alexis' grandfather or so she lovingly calls "Pa." He just got it a few minutes ago and already has 9 + friends. Connecting on Facebook keeps him in the loop especially since his granddaughter has been in everyone's news feed the past couple of weeks and he wants to be in the know. Facebook is the best news source these days and Pa wants in. Family, friends and acquaintances are logging in to show their support and help raise money so that Alexis, now in her 3rd relapse with Leukemia, can come to Israel (where she currently is) for special treatment.

While Alexis is here in Israel, Pa is back in Toronto, logging in and keeping track of his beautiful granddaughter. I know that not all grandchildren would want their grandparents online, but it's a really good way to keep them in the loop--I can't imagine how happy a grandparent might be when they get "poked" or receive a wall post from their grandchildren--not to mention updates. It's also a good way for older adults to mesh into modern social media. Perhaps Joe can inspire older adults to tap into this wonderful network.
