Monday's Inspiration: McCoy Tyner

I admired McCoy Tyner as he took to his throne aka the piano bench at Blue Note Jazz Club in New York. His 71-year-old hands took to the ivory like wood to a fire.

McCoy's most recent album, Guitar's, recorded in 2008, goes well beyond musical boundaries--not only does it caress our ear drums in the sweetest sort of way, but it serves as a social narrative speaking out against the social construction of an ageist society--in my eyes at least--this album helps to break down the false premonition that once you get older you are no longer capable of doing what you use to do.

Tyner puts this misconception to shame.

For 58 years, Tyner has moved audiences and musicians alike and has remained a legend in shaping modern jazz.

Working alongside Bela Fleck, Derek Trucks, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and John Scofield, Guitar's epitomizes a true mosaic of generations--a blending of ages, musical talent and soul.

I had the great pleasure and honor meeting Mr. Tyner after the show--he embraced me and said, "you are a good girl--a nice girl!"

Thank you to McCoy Tyner for giving us a reason to be inspired.
