grey and gay

The world as we know it (although our grandparents might have a few other things to say about it--"I remember when...") is very diverse and has grown to be more accepting of the LGBT community. However, we are most certainly not where we should be on this subject just yet.

Today, older LGBT adults live among a generation of people who have never actually accepted them (we too often see this in religion still). This poses a huge challenge for those who are grey and gay. Not only are they faced with the normative age related changes, they too are faced with the challenges of a) being openly gay among those who do not accept them or, b) sadly for some, have been stuck in the "closet" so to speak their entire lives.

There are many LGBT organizations today (thankfully) that work to advocate for this unique phenomenon. I hope that before the time I have my grandchildren (well, I guess I need children first...and...) the LGBT world will get the support and opportunities it not only deserves, but will also stop being questioned on the basis of their sexuality.

Check out this article for more information on LGBT among the older population, specifically nursing homes!
