Sticks and stones

Awareness of language and the words we use in the aging field is extremely important (just like in any field).

We have to be conscious and avoid using terms like "cute," "dirty old man," and "elderly" when we refer to older adults. In fact, "older adult" is what us gerontologist folk often use as a way to show respect.

We can make a huge difference in the way older adults may feel if we are aware of the language we choose. Positive connotations of aging (as with anything else) have a direct correlation with the way older adults may feel and view themselves. Just like the looking glass theory explains, the way others view you is how you will likely perceive yourself (Charles Horton Cooley).

This topic will certainly pop up as this blog continues to grow!
